ILO: Economic slowdown could force workers into low-quality jobs

In a new report entitled “World Employment and Social Issues: Trends 2023” released on 16 January, ILO said that global employment growth will be only 1% in 2023, less than half the level in 2022. Global unemployment is expected to rise slightly in 2023, by about 3 million, to 208 million, or 5.8% globally.

The report also found that, despite the start of a recovery in 2021, the chronic shortage of better job opportunities is expected to worsen, leading many workers to accept lower-quality, often low-paying jobs, sometimes with insufficient working hours.

Richard Samans, Director of the ILO’s Research Department and coordinator of the report, said that “the decline in productivity growth is also of great concern to us, as productivity is essential to address the interrelated crises we face in purchasing power, environmental sustainability and human well-being.”
