With this reform, the government aims to bring in the labour force, to confront the shortage of skills necessary for its economy, and to address the increase in the aging rate, with the pressure that this poses on the retirement system.
While the opposition parties criticized this approach for the danger of “attracting irregular migration”, a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior stated on November 25, in a press conference that this plan is pivotal for the ruling coalition, “with the clear recognition that Germany is a country of immigration.”
The proposed amendments to the German Nationality Law include reducing the number of years for obtaining citizenship to five years of residence in the country from eight years, as well as lifting restrictions on dual citizenship. The draft amendments, which will soon be presented to other ministries for consultation, also include facilitating the acquisition of citizenship within three years for a foreigner who has integrated well into society in view of their results in studies or work.
These amendments will be presented after the approval of the coalition government to the German Parliament.
