Palestine: 70% of women in the Gaza Strip are victims of violence according to new statistics

In this context, the UN Women Special Representative in Gaza called for the establishment of a legal framework to protect Palestinian women and girls from all forms of violence. In her speech, she stressed that “there is a need to break the silence and involve men in this process of change.”

Citing official Palestinian statistics, the UN official said that about 59% of married women experience domestic violence. The statistics also showed that 66.8% of victims of violence are between 20 and 24 years old. Finally, 70.4% of women in the Gaza Strip are abused, compared to 52% in the West Bank.

The director of the Center for Women’s Legal Researches and Consulting (CWLRC), Zainab Al-Ghunaimi, said that Palestinian women are victims of several forms of violence, ranging from societal violence to “violence by the occupation forces who commit attacks, arrests, encirclement, and destruction of infrastructure and economic conditions.”
