European Union: Towards a new strategy for coordinating migration policies

Infomigrants reported, citing AFP, that the meeting will examine a new work plan to improve and strengthen coordination between the EU and countries of origin in order to speed up the deportation of migrants whose asylum applications are not accepted. The new plan will also reactivate an agreement that allows EU states to voluntarily receive 8,000 migrants per year.

The agreement in question also provides for aid for Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt to strengthen the fight against irregular immigration. In this context, the EU has earmarked a budget of 580 million euros for the period 2021-2023, which will be dedicated to consolidating the development and growth of North African countries.

It is worth noting that more than 90 thousand migrants, mainly from Tunisia and Libya, have arrived on the Maltese and Italian coasts since the beginning of the current year, thus recording an increase of more than 50% compared to 2021.
