Immigration: Spanish parliamentary investigation into the violent expulsion of migrants in the Melilla tragedy

According to Spanish media, this field visit aims to verify “the Spanish Civil Guard’s lack of respect for national and international immigration and asylum laws” and that it carried out 470 immediate returns of irregular migrants who managed to cross the border to Melilla.

The Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlasca, admitted during a plenary session of Parliament, last September, the return of 103 irregular migrants who crossed the border after the events, including “asylum seekers, minors, and the injured victims,” explaining that the return took place within the framework of legal procedures. While the Spanish newspaper El País quoted statements by migrants who confirmed that “they managed to cross the fence and enter the Melilla soil, but the Spanish Civil Guard expelled them by firing gas canisters in their faces.”
