Tunisia: Women agricultural workers denounce exploitation and poor working conditions

During the protest, held under the slogan Recognise us, women workers denounced the deterioration of their working conditions and called for recognizing their economic and social rights.

The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) reported that the protest, which was held in front of the municipal theatre in the capital Tunis, was subjected to “police harassment”. In a statement, the FTDES said that the workers coming from Sidi Bouzid were prevented from accessing the street leading to the rally site, while those coming from Jebeniana were forced to leave.

The organisation stressed that these workers are not covered by social protection programmes and are deprived of the necessary measures of health and safety at work. They are also victims of salary discrimination and lack of clarity in the employment relationship with their employers, given the growing and ‘omnipresent’ role of “intermediaries”.

The FTDES reaffirmed its commitment to defend the rights of women workers in the agricultural sector and its support for all their demands and movements.
