Migration: Climate change leads to an increase in migration

The study indicated that the regions witnessing the most severe climate change phenomena across the world are the most affected. A huge number of people in these areas are under the threat of famine, which may lead to displacement and multiple patterns of irregular migration.

Gabriella Bucher, Director-General of Oxfam International claimed that “millions of people already suffering from ongoing conflict and economic crises are now losing their livelihoods due to severe weather disasters and extreme weather conditions.”

The report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, also published this year, confirms that it is likely that rising sea levels, droughts, high temperatures, and other natural disasters will cause the displacement of about 143 million people over the next 30 years. However, experts stress that most climate-related displacements are internal.
