While the gender pay gap is explained by individual characteristics such as education, working time, job discrimination, skills or experience, ILO says that a large part of it is due to discrimination on the basis of sex or gender.
ILO, also, reported that women were among the groups most affected by the pandemic, in terms of income security, representation in the affected sectors, and the gender division of family responsibilities, which negatively affected their employment and impacted decades of progress towards gender equality.
ILO therefore recommends the importance of addressing shortcomings in gender equality to achieve a comprehensive, sustainable, and resilient recovery. “While more time is needed to assess the effectiveness of various measures, it is promising that governments and organizations of workers seek to find creative solutions, such as wage transparency,” said Manuela Tomei, Director of the ILO’s Conditions of Work and Employment Programme.
