Qatar: HRW calls for reviewing its worker compensation program in the World Cup

In preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the State of Qatar has been criticized for its labour laws and its treatment of workers. However, HRW quoted the Qatari Ministry of Labour saying that the Workers’ Support Fund in Qatar has paid about $164 million in compensation to 36,373 workers in the World Cup projects, from 17 countries, since 2020. The organization did not specify the amount of compensation that is still required.

In this context, Michael Page, deputy director of the Middle East division at Human Rights Watch, said that the compensation programs implemented by Qatar came late and did not include everyone, noting that “there is still a lot of work to be done,” particularly migrant workers.
