Iraq: A trade union campaign against a law banning union pluralism and the right to collective bargaining

This law prohibits the establishment of independent trade unions for workers, especially in the public sector, and encourages trade union monopoly at the expense of pluralism.

The GFTU condemned the judicial trials against leaders of independent trade unions, as well as the penalties imposed on workers who defend their rights because of this law, in complete contradiction with the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions on union pluralism, the right to organize, and collective bargaining.

The federation put forward legislation for a bill on trade union organization for workers and employees, in which some unions participated in writing jointly with the Iraqi Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, in line with ILO conventions, and emphasizes union pluralism as well as the right to establish union organizations in the public sector.
