Tunisia: UGTT announces a new general strike in the civil service and the public sector

Condemning the government’s policy of indifference towards the workers’ demands, by refusing any negotiation with the trade union party, the UGTT reiterated its demand for a new wage increase in order to protect the purchasing power, which has deteriorated sharply due to inflation.

The UGTT also affirmed that its strike is not political and that it is a response to an economic crisis.

The Tunisian government is preparing to enter into new negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with a view to obtaining a loan, the granting of which is conditional on a series of reforms relating mainly to the revision of state subsidies and the reduction of the wage bill.
