Christa Rottsteiner, IOM’s Chief of Mission in Yemen, said “migrants stranded in Marib live in fear. Many of them are under the control of smuggling groups who expose migrants to exploitation and violence.” She called for more support for the organization to help it get migrants out of danger.
The UN stated that thousands of other migrants are still waiting in dire conditions for the same opportunity to return. Marib governorate is considered a transit point for migrants heading towards Saudi Arabia. The number of stranded migrants in Marib is estimated at about 4,500, who have either become unable to continue their journey due to conflicts or are being held against their will by smugglers, while others have been searching for a way to leave Yemen safely for two years.
It is worth noting that IOM provides humanitarian assistance and protection services to respond to the needs of returnees, in line with the Regional Migrant Response Plan (MRP) for the Horn of Africa and Yemen 2022.
