The victims are often immigrant workers, women, children, and lower classes. The Iraqi Ministry of Interior stated that 95% of foreign workers in Iraq work in irregular situations and represent about 150,000 workers.
In February 2022, the Iraqi human rights organization Al-Masir revealed the growing phenomenon of human trafficking in Iraq, which according to the organization resulted in the spread of poverty, unemployment, and the rise of organized crime, and stated that 300 cases of human trafficking were registered during 2021.
