Saudi Arabia: New report unveils the working conditions of Asian migrants

Active in the defence of migrant workers’ rights, the NGO referred to the death of a 27-year-old Asian worker who was found dead in his home in the southwestern city of Jizan. While the Interior Ministry said the death was caused by cardiac arrest, the victim’s family said the young man had been working all day in the heat and in conditions unsuited to the weather.

Migrants Rights criticised the indifference of the authorities and the lack of any serious investigation into these deaths, explaining that the number of deaths is much higher than claimed by the authorities, as official data only considers deaths that occur in the workplace and concern regular migrants.

The report also stressed that the physical burden on foreign workers and compliance with occupational health and safety standards is the responsibility of employers and host countries.
