Jordan: Experts call for suspension of the Defence Law

Experts from the Workers’ Bureau and the Phoenix Centre for Studies have severely criticised the law’s provisions for undermining workers’ rights by allowing wage cuts and the suspension of employment contracts.

In its provisions on social security, this law allows social funds to assist senior citizens and companies in difficulty. These are tasks that do not normally fall within the prerogatives of social security and which are detrimental to daily-wage workers (who represent almost half of the workforce in Jordan) as they are normally given priority to benefit from exceptional social security measures since they are not covered by the National Assistance Fund.

It is worth noting that the Jordanian government is currently seeking to suspend the defence law, but is maintaining three of its provisions relating to the requirement for vaccinations to enter public and private companies, the imprisonment of indebted civilians and the protection of jobs in the sectors most affected by the pandemic.
