In a statement, the workers called on the government to “clarify the future of the company and ensure the payment of salaries and social aid, suspended since the announcement of the judicial liquidation.”
The secretary-general of the National Oil and Gas Union said that without the resumption of its activities, the refinery could hardly be saved and workers’ rights would be violated. The protesters said they intend to continue protesting until they obtain their rights.
It is worth noting that the Samir refinery, which had a production capacity of 200,000 barrels per day, was closed in August 2015 due to a debt crisis, after a court decision was taken to liquidate it and to appoint an independent judicial body to manage it.
