The 13th annual forum invited stakeholders in the textile sector to provide decent and safe working conditions for workers.
The forum, which was held online for two and a half hours, addressed ways to improve the working conditions in factories by providing a work environment free of violence, harassment, wage discrimination, and providing decent housing for workers in the sector.
The textile industry sector in Jordan employs about 65,000 workers, the majority of whom are women and migrant workers. The value of the sector’s exports in 2020, mostly to the United States, was estimated at $1.6 billion (22% of the total Jordanian exports).
The joint program between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) launched in 2009, “A Better Work, Jordan”, includes 88 factories and covers about 95% of employment in the sector. The program brings together partners in Jordan from all levels of the global textile industry. The cooperation aims at developing the Jordanian labour law to reach international labour standards, improving working conditions, promoting respect for labour rights, and strengthening competitiveness.
It is worth noting that many reports on violations in the sector (including harassment, arbitrary dismissals, and poor working conditions) have been issued.
