The General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) denounced the response of the council of ministers’ secretariat to its correspondence concerning the unemployed and retired workers and its refusal better their poor economic conditions. The GFTU called for amending and increasing the salaries of retired workers working in the private sector.
The secretariat of the Council of Ministers replied in its letter No. 34391 on 10/10/2019 that the Ministry of Finance—Budget Department— confirmed, in its letter No. 13604 dated to 8/26/2019, that the request could not be met due to the lack of a legal document authorizing the Minister of Finance to increase the budget after its legislation and the enforcement of emergency reserve allocations for the year 2019, noting that there is a planned deficit estimated at 34 trillion Iraqi dinars.
However, it is worth noting that the number of retired workers from the private sector covered by the union does not exceed 20,000 retired workers. The GFTU wonders how “will the youth be provided job opportunities while retired workers receive weak salaries (not exceeding 250,000 Iraqi dinars)?”
