TRENDS publishes a study on pay gaps globally and ways to address them

On the occasion of the International Equal Pay Day, TRENDS Research & Advisory recently published a study entitled “Global Gender wage inequality: The Existing Gaps and How to Address Them.”

The study shows the wide wage gap and gender discrimination between men and women in jobs of equal value.

According to United Nations statistics, the study confirmed that there is a “gender gap between women and men” globally that will continue for a long time in both developed and developing countries. The study explains that for every US dollar earned by men, women earn an average of 77 cents from the same work worldwide, making women poorer than men.

The study, also, addressed, the so-called “maternity penalty,” where the wage of a working woman in many countries decreases when giving birth to a child, while the father receives a higher income than the one who does not have a child, for the same value of work, and, hence, receives what is called the “paternity bonus.”

The study emphasized the benefits of equal pay for equal work, without any discrimination, warning from the negative results of wage gaps on economic development and social welfare. It could, also, result in inequality of opportunities and choices particularly those of increasing skilled migration and the reputation of the concerned institutions, leading, therefore to a decrease in productivity, salaries, the accumulation of wealth, and development goals.

The study concluded by emphasizing the importance of the role of legislation in applying equal pay for equal work, without gender discrimination.
