The World Health Organization (WHO) stated in a report on October 21, 2021 that about 115,000 health workers have died from COVID-19. The organization suggested that vaccinating health workers is a priority. The estimates are based on the total number of COVID-19 deaths reported to WHO as of May 2021.
Tedros Adhanom, Director general of WHO, said that “an average of 2 out of 5 health care workers globally have received the full vaccine,” based on data from 119 countries.
He added that this rate masks “large differences between regions and economic groups. In Africa, less than 10% of health workers received the full vaccine, compared to more than 80% of health workers in most high-income countries.”
He condemned the inequality in the distribution of vaccines between countries and regions. He called on countries that have sufficient doses to share them with other countries.
It is worth noting that recent statistics on vaccine supplies in the G20 countries indicate that out of the 1.2 billion vaccine doses pledged by these countries, only 150 million doses have been received by the Covax initiative.
