In a press conference held on September 9, the Bakers’ Syndicate of Beirut and Mount Lebanon criticized the study adopted by the representatives of bakery owners during the meetings of the committee for the revision of the costs and prices of bread.
The syndicate considered that the data provided by the owners are neither accurate nor real, especially with regard to the number of workers, salaries, work permits, and stays and insurance of Syrian workers.
Contrary to what was claimed by the owners regarding the costs of permits and residency for foreign workers, the Syndicate indicated that the National Social Security Fund stated that 90% of the bakery workers subscribed are Lebanese. This information was confirmed by the Ministry of Labour which stated that the number of work permits issued and renewed for Syrian workers did not exceed 300 permits until the end of 2019.
The syndicate denounced the violations of the workers’ rights by the committee and called for the application of the labour law in the sector, threatening to resort to law if necessary.
