In a report entitled “‘In the prime of their lives’: Qatar’s failure to investigate, remedy and prevent migrant workers’ deaths,” Amnesty International stated that thousands of migrant workers have died in the previous decade in Qatar.
The NGO accused the Qatari authorities of not conducting serious investigations into these deaths, despite evidence that they were linked to unsafe working conditions. The investigation attributes the deaths to “natural causes” or mysterious heart failure without looking into the real conditions despite the fact that heat is one of the great risks posed on workers.
The organization stressed that despite the new protection measures for workers recently introduced by Qatar, significant risks still remain. Amnesty International called on the Qatari authorities to conduct an “independent, comprehensive, and transparent investigation into all deaths of foreign workers and to establish a mechanism to provide adequate compensation to the families of all deceased foreign workers whose working conditions may have contributed to their deaths.”
