The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) welcomed the Palestinian government’s decision to raise the minimum wage to 1,880 shekels that was 1,450 shekels. The increase was approved on August 23, 2021 and will be effective from 2022.
The Secretary-General of the Federation noted that despite being a good step, it still does not provide the requirements of a decent life for Palestinian workers, given the high cost of living.
The Secretary-General stressed that the Federation will continue to demand an increase in the minimum wage until it reaches 2,450 shekels, which is the poverty line in Palestine.
The trade union called on workers to welcome the new decision. It, also, urged employers to respect the law and warned against arbitrary dismissals on the pretext of not being able to pay workers due to the increase.
