Egypt: New law dismissing state employees who test positive for drugs

A new law has been passed in Egypt to dismiss government employees if they test positive for drugs. Official reports have indicated an increase in the number of employees who take drugs in the last three years. The most prominent substances used were hashish, tramadol, and morphine.

The law will enter into force on January 16, 2022. Addicted employees were given six months to voluntarily apply for the Addiction Control and Treatment Fund, in order to benefit from a free of charge treatment without being dismissed from work.

In this regard, the Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF) decided to organize seminars to introduce the new law and talk about methods of drug prevention and treatment.
