The International Labour Organization (ILO), in cooperation with the FAFO Institute for Labour and Social Research, completed a report on the impact of COVID-19 on small businesses in Jordan. It was submitted last July.
This study was based on a survey of 2,000 small businesses. The results showed that the pandemic had severely affected them.
The report showed that 40% of small businesses in Jordan dismissed their workers during the pandemic.
The report demonstrated the burdens of the pandemic. It showed that rent represented the biggest burden, 61% of small businesses, salaries and social security of 51% of them, and eventually the payment of bills.
The report revealed that half of the businesses were not able to keep production going. Only 10% of them introduced online platforms for business sustainability.
The report offered suggestions based on the results of the survey, which included in particular, developing social protection and motivating businesses to invest in training their employees and upgrading their skills. It also recommended helping small and medium businesses by offering tax exemptions or postponing due taxes in order to create employment opportunities.
