Tunisia: A severe crisis in the tourism sector due to COVID-19

The tourism sector in Tunisia has been affected by the health crisis resulting from COVID-19. The wide propagation of the virus since last April led to the cancellation of the tourist season for this summer. Specialists explained that domestic tourism was also affected by the closures and did not succeed for compensating the sector’s losses.

The Tunisian Federation of Hotels stated in a previous study that 27,000 workers have lost their jobs and that 60 percent of tourism sector workers are threatened with poverty.

Sector professionals blame the government for not supporting the tourist establishments, that have been exhausted by the suspension of their activities for months, forcing many of them to close or declare bankruptcy.

The president of the Federation of Travel and Tourism Agencies believes that the sector’s recovery depends on restoring the image of Tunisia as a safe tourist destination, by vaccinating of 70% of its citizens.
