Hundreds of irregular immigrants decided on July 21 to end their hunger strike reaching an agreement with the government. They initially protested against their illegal situation in Belgium and having residence permits.
The immigrants, mostly Algerian and Moroccan workers, who have lived for several years in Belgium illegally, started a hunger strike nearly two months ago in a church in the capital Brussels.
The protest received great support from political parties in the ruling coalition who threatened to withdraw from the government.
In this context, the Minister of State for Asylum and Migration, Sami Mahdi, stated that the current settlement procedures are for a humanitarian cause and that the government promised to improve legal immigration channels.
