The director of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Zarzis said that the agency helps the Tunisian government through a budget dedicated to helping refugees in terms of health, education, rationing, and housing, while the authorities are responsible for their physical and legal protection.
In a statement given to a local newspaper, the UNHCR director in Zarzis said that Tunisia, as a host country, does not record expulsions and returns to the country of origin but faces several problems in integrating migrants.
According to the latest UNHCR statistics (end of June 2021), approximately 8,465 migrants and refugee seekers, including 3,350 women, are living in Tunisia. The majority of these people come from the Ivory Coast (3,511 migrants), Syria (2,135 migrants), Cameroon, Guinea, Sudan and other countries.
The official also indicated that the greatest difficulty they face is that many migrants do not have legal documents, which further complicates their integration, especially when it comes to enrolling their children in public schools.
