On June 23, the council of ministers approved new measures to fix the conditions of irregular migrant workers in Jordan, including exemptions when they decide to definitively return to their countries. The government provided these workers with a deadline to settle their status, from July 4 to and September 2. The number of irregular migrant workers is 440,000 out of 850,000, according to the Ministry of Labour.
It is worth noting that Jordan has been taking measures for several years to control the labour market in order to provide job opportunities for Jordanians. However, unemployment displayed a significant increase with COVID-19 and the return of thousands of Jordanians from abroad, especially from the Gulf countries.
According to the Government’s Department of Statistics, the unemployment rate reached 25% at the end of the first quarter of 2021, registering an increase of 5.7% compared to the same period in 2020.
