Hundreds of factories in the Gaza Strip are witnessing major disruptions due to the closure of border crossings by the occupation authorities, which, also, prohibits the entry of all raw materials needed for industry in the region.
In this context, the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) warned that the closure of Israeli border crossings with the Gaza Strip would lead to a major humanitarian disaster, due to the disruption of dozens of factories and the dismissal of thousands of workers.
The president of the trade union centre mentioned that 500 factories, out of a total of 2,000 factories, have been forced to close because of the blockade, stressing that these factories, which used to employ about 100,000 workers, currently employ only 21,000 people.
The trade union organisation called on the international community, Arab and international trade union organisations, and the UN to put pressure on the occupation to reopen the border crossings before the collapse of the Gaza Strip’s economy, which is in great difficulties due to the pandemic and the restrictions imposed by the occupation.
