Egypt: The Iron and Steel Company is officially closed

The “blast furnace” flame has been extinguished for the first time in 67 years at Helwan Iron and Steel Factory.

On Sunday, May 30, 7,000 iron and steel workers were informed to never come to work again.

The Centre for Trade Union & Workers’ Services (CTUWS) stated that 1,200 iron and steel workers gathered on Monday in front of the administration building to demand their financial rights upon liquidation, as they demanded compensation of two months for each year of service, with a minimum of 450 thousand pounds.

It is worth noting that, during the past months, the workers tried to stop the liquidation decision.
