Many media sources reported that the Algerian Social Insurance Fund is currently witnessing a crisis characterized as the most difficult one since its foundation due to the large financial deficit that resulted from the decline in workers’ contributions and the increasing in compensation.
A high-ranking official in the Social Insurance Fund stated that the crisis began with the launch of the “healing card” in 2015 that has been used and exploited in illegal ways leading, therefore, to huge losses.
The excessive use of sick licenses also contributed to increasing the fund’s financial deficit that reached nearly 1.4 million sick days, and the compensation that amounted to $13 million, as stated by a central official in the Social Insurance Fund, who explained that nearly 40% of the authorized sick holidays were not valid.
About 4,000 recovery cards have been suspended and brought to justice for fraud charges. Also, 90,000 healing cards were blacklisted and their owners prosecuted.
