The North Observatory for Human Rights held the Moroccan government responsible for the death of two young men who drowned while trying to reach Ceuta from the city of Fnideq.
The NGO denounced, in a statement, the agreement between Morocco and Spain to hand over illegal immigrants who entered Ceuta swimming, mentioning that it violates international human rights conventions.
The Spanish authorities had handed over to Morocco 63 illegal immigrants, both young and underage, who had entered the city of Ceuta by the end of last week.
The Observatory stated that the attempts of hundreds of Moroccans to flee by sea is the result of an economic and social crisis. He noted that the measures taken after the pandemic deepened the crisis and affected most of the informal economic activities, which represent the only source of income for millions of Moroccans.
The Observatory stressed the need to find real solutions to these problems instead of only opting for the security approach to combat illegal immigration.
