Jordan: Position Paper for Promoting Occupational Safety and Health Measures

On the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Jordanian Labour Watch of the Phenix Center for Economics & Informatics Studies, in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, issued a position paper at the end of April 2021.

The paper criticized the usefulness of the labour law texts that work against the violation of safety and occupational health measures in the workplace. The paper showed that the costs of establishing technical and engineering rules to protect workers in the workplace are far more expensive than the fines employers have to pay when violating these rules that range between 100 and 500 Jordanian dinars. The dilemma encourages employers to pay fines instead of implementing protection measures.

The paper, also, directed criticism to the Department of Inspection and Supervision of Occupational Safety and Health Measures, particularly concerning the organizational aspect. It is worth noting that the Inspection Department, with its tendency not to issue disputes with employers, contributes to increasing violations of workers’ rights.
