Tunisia: Debates between the UGTT and the Government on the Wage Bill

The debate on the wage bill between the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and the government has returned during the Tunisian Delegation’s visit to Washington and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to negotiate the possibility of obtaining new financing for development programs in the country. The delegation included the minister of finance and the governor of the central bank of Tunisia.

The government seeks to reduce the wage bill claiming that the state budget is insufficient for paying wages. The UGTT demands an increase in the wages of public employment and the public sector claiming that tax evasion can cover a significant part of the state’s budget deficit. The trade union openly claims that the solution to the crisis is controlling tax evasion and demands, therefore, negotiations concerning increasing salaries.
