The Kuwaiti Society for Human Rights denounced the decision of the Public Authority for Manpower not to renew work permits for workers over the age of 60 who have obtained a high school diploma or below. The association urged the cancellation of the decision.
The NGO explained that workers who lived in Kuwait belong to Kuwait more than their countries of origin. It warned that this decision poses a threat to the lives of migrant workers, especially since many of them come from areas of conflict.
In this regard, the association called on the government to end the sponsorship system. It also called on the government to have national legislation that abides to international conventions of human rights.
The association called on the government to join the convention for the protection of migrant workers and their families, and to apply the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in the Arab Region, which was adopted in 2018 in Marrakesh, Morocco, with the aim of regulating the conditions of 272 million immigrants in the world.
