Thousands of workers, living in difficult economic situation, have stopped their work in Borma due to the measures taken to control the spread of COVID-19.
90% of Borma’s population, 17,000 inhabitants, works in agricultural, vegetable trade, and seasonal occupations with a daily-wage system. Partial quarantine and lockdown measures prevented them from doing their business.
A specialist in agriculture stated that, like most plantation owners, he had to dismiss daily-wage workers. The work of the agricultural plantations in Borma decreased by 50% due to the current sanitary crisis.
The official of the region’s municipality stated that part of the workers in Borma, whose work has stopped, are currently relying on their allocations from economic support programs, loans and debts, to cover their expenses until the partial and total ban measures are changed and their work is resumed.
