A centre for hosting seasonal migrant workers was recently opened in Cassibile, Sicily. The municipality of Syracuse built it for €240,000 that was provided by the Italian Ministry of the Interior.
The centre includes 17 housing units that can accommodate 80 people. It, also, contains a health point for medical prevention and disease diagnosis.
The centre provides transportation services for seasonal workers to their workplaces and, also, one meal per day for each worker. A special office for immigration of the Sicilian Regional Government will be supervising the services through the EU “Supreme” program fund. This program aims at creating a model that fights the exploitation of agricultural workers and promotes respect for human and social rights.
A media source specializing in community issues in Italy and around the world stated that “after decades of illegal and precarious work, 80 immigrants who work in the agricultural fields in Cassibile will be able to obtain decent housing equipped with water, toilets and electricity.”
