The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, stated that migration detention centres in Libya should be gradually closed, especially centres in which violence and systematic violation of human rights have been recorded.
Grandi stated in a press conference held in Italy that the information available indicates that there are about 4,000 detainees in official centres in Libya, at least a quarter of them are migrants and refugees.
The UN official appreciated the role played by United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations in contributing to the conditions of people who leave detention centres in avoiding traffickers and criminals.
