Palestine: UNRWA makes Surprising Decisions Against its Workers

The UNRWA Staff Union General Conference described UNRWA’s (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency) recent decisions as shocking.

 

The conference participants were surprised by these decisions that go against the interest of its workers. The decisions came after difficult negotiations which was even more surprising. These decisions consisted of cancelling permanent contracts, cancelling the transfer of workers from category X to category A, dividing salaries, delaying payments, and freezing the annual wage increase.

 

Also, the workers denounced these decisions that came after the agency’s financial crisis that has been solved after the United States of America transferred $ 150 million to the UNRWA budget that has stopped contributing to its budget for three years.

 

The conference considered that by doing so the agency gives up its role in ensuring relief and work for Palestinian refugees until they can return to Palestine.

 

The conference called on the UNRWA administration to revoke these decisions and to disburse the frozen annual increase.
