Palestine: Trade Unions Demand Implementing Minimum Wage for Supermarket Workers

The President of Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) demanded enabling malls and supermarket workers in Gaza to get the official minimum wage defined by the ministerial order.

The trade union official explained that the main supermarkets were not affected by the blockade of the Gaza Strip and the pandemic. On the contrary, they scored large profits.

The same source stated that the wages of supermarket workers range between 600 and 800 shekels and that accountants receive 1000 shekels per month. The minimum wage set by the Ministry of Labour should be 1,450 shekels per month.

The Palestinian trade union official noted that the 700 workers in this sector are subject to violations including not being paid for the extra work hours, not receiving family allowances, not having their annual leave, and employing trainees for longer periods without being paid.

The same source mentioned that the PGFTU is planning protests to demand increasing the salaries of the workers.
