The Autonomous National Union of Public Administration Staff (SNAPAP) and the Autonomous General Confederation of Workers in Algeria conducted an economic study on family expenses by 81.000 Algerian Dinars.
The study showed that COVID-19 worsened the Algerian purchase power especially for those who lost their jobs, but also the inflammation of the last weeks increased poverty among Algerians. Inflammation may get worse during Ramadan.
The study was based on five-member families. Therefore, the monthly salary should be 81,751 dinars to ensure the basic needs of families.
The study showed that 70% of Algerians work in the private and informal sectors and most of them do not have social security.
The study added that the governmental aid to small businesses as measures seeking to confront COVID-19 included only 5% of these workers.
The study, also, showed that household expenditures in recent years have increased as a result of the rise in prices and the decline in the local currency.
The study concluded that the Algerian family currently needs to improve its standard of living and increase its monthly income by 12%.
