Morocco: Anger and Protests among Workers after the Arbitrary Dismissal in the Agricultural Sector

Hundreds of workers in the agricultural sector in “Chtouka Ait Baha” province protested after the region’s companies fired about 700 workers without giving them the compensation the Moroccan labour law indicates.

The companies’ owners claimed their action was due to the workers’ union activities. The fired workers complain that the owners of these companies are ignoring their rights including social security as well as not respecting some workers’ long career in the field despite their efforts in the production of vegetables and crops as well as their important role in bringing profit to the company.

In this regard, the General Secretary of the National Federation of the Agricultural Sector expressed their readiness to launch a national campaign to draw attention to the poor situation of workers in this sector, to denounce the companies’ violations of the Moroccan labour law, and to reclaim the workers’ right to unionize.
