Four thousand young Mauritanians have started teaching illegally, seeking to contribute to the education sector and obtain a job opportunity. They signed a work contract which necessitates that any contract renewal or extension must be approved by both parties. The ministry, however, ignored this agreement.
Therefore, the protestors started a sit-in in front of the ministry since the end of the year 2020, demanding to be integrated in public employment as promised and to have legal contracts. After one month of the sit-in without receiving any response, they decided to suspend the protest and give the ministry a chance to fix the situation.
In this regard, the teachers expressed their readiness to continue the protests until they get their rights as guaranteed by the law. They also have called on all their colleagues to continue the fight until their demands are met.
