The president of the General Union of Petrochemical Workers, Khaled Zayoud, warned against government decisions regarding the oil refinery company; decisions that could lead to the shutdown of the refinery's production if the dispute between the two parties persists. The union leader warned that the dispute is a threat to the refinery's workers and the country's energy security.
In a media statement, Khaled Zayoud explained that "the decisions and procedures issued by the Council of Ministers, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, have serious repercussions for the company, its workers, its partners and the entire national economy. Mr. Zayoud called on the government to find solutions that preserve the continuity of the refinery and the rights of its workers. He recalled that the cessation of the refinery's activities would put an end to the work of 10 thousand incumbents and will lead to the dismissal of all logistics workers and drivers.
On the other hand, the president of the General Union of Petrochemical Workers recalled that the economic repercussions of the pandemic on the energy sector amplified the economic crisis of the oil refinery and recalled that it is the responsibility of the government to support the companies impacted by Covid-19 in order to preserve the jobs and to prevent an increase in the unemployment rate.
