Human Rights Groups Criticize the New European Charter for Migration and Asylum Draft

Since its announcement on September 23, the draft of the new European Charter for Migration and Asylum has been facing widespread criticism from a large number of human rights organizations relating to the migration and asylum questions.

The charter is based on three axes: increasing partnership with countries of origin and transit, improving the lives of people in countries of origin, countering smuggling networks, and finally setting strict restrictions on accepting asylum applications.

Many human rights organizations did not hide their criticisms of the text of the charter for not including any safeguarding controls for respecting the Geneva Convention.

“Caritas” organization explicitly stated that “this charter came to satisfy a number of anti-immigration countries”.

Many organizations also expressed their fear that the European Union countries will overlook a serious human rights discussion of the text of the charter in the face of the economic and social pressures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
