Lebanon: 10,000 foreign workers seek to return to their countries

The United Nation Migration Agency (IOM) has said that about 10,000 foreign workers are seeking to return home because of the economic crisis in Lebanon.

IOM has reported that the number of workers applying to return to their countries has increased significantly following the explosion at the port of Beirut last August. In this context, the IOM representative, Dima Hadad, revealed that UN agencies operating in Lebanon have recorded “shocking numbers” of foreign workers at risk and added that 50% of those who have contacted IOM have said they are no longer able to pay their rents.

It is worthy to note that Lebanon has been going through a major economic crisis since last year. This crisis, amplified by the pandemic, led to the outbreak of major popular protests that eventually ousted the government.
