The Agency for Local Democracy in Kairouan (central-eastern Tunisia) revealed the results of its study on the status of women working in the agricultural sector in Tunisia.
In a press conference held last Thursday, the agency said that 58 % of female peasant workers in Tunisia receive a daily net wage of between $ 4 and $ 6, and 30 % of them earn less than $ 4 a day, while the remaining 12 % are paid more than $ 6 a day. .
The study attributed the low daily wage to the fragile contractual nature and the state’s inability to protect these social groups, knowing that the study included 600 women working in the agricultural sector, and 300 farmers in 3 governorates known for agricultural activities, namely: Kairouan, Sidi Bouzid and Mahdia.
The same study revealed that 66 % of the surveyed peasants believe that women can do all agricultural activities, such as growing products, using mechanical machines, foraging, using medicines and pruning trees.
About 57 % of the surveyed farmers attributed the reasons for their dependence on the female peasant labor to the lack of a male workforce, and 27 % considered that women are more productive in work compared to men, while 16 % of them stated that the reason for their dependence on women in agricultural work is due to their wages are low compared to men.
