UN: Europe Must Honor its Commitments to Migrants

During a press conference held by Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephan Dujarric called on European countries to “respect their obligations” after a number of them refused to receive migrants and refugees and return their boats to the sea.

Dujarric explained: “Those European countries must live up to their obligations under international law and international refugee law, and they must realize that every migrant or refugee has the right to security, and that their dignity should be respected”.

In response to journalists’ questions about “a number of European countries which refused to receive these migrants”, Dujarric said: “Unfortunately, feelings of anxiety and sadness are renewed, and we see people dying repeatedly at sea.”

Dujarric also stressed that “the position of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, since he held the position of High Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015) until today, has not changed, which is that European countries have not done enough with regards to the protection of migrants and refugees across the Mediterranean”.
