Last Thursday, the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT by its French acronym) issued a statement calling for the speedy ratification of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention No. 189 concerning the rights of domestic workers, in a way that guarantees decent work conditions for this vulnerable group of women workers.
This statement coincided with the National Tunisian Women Day, which Tunisia celebrates every day on August 13 of each year. The same statement called on the government to further support women in the sectors that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as domestic workers, artisans and workers in the agricultural sector, indicating that women are the most vulnerable to the repercussions of the pandemic.
It also called for a review of national legislation related to maternity protection, to ensure equality between female workers in the private sector with their counterparts in the public service, as well as the ratification of International Labor Convention No. 183 on maternity protection.
The Union called for the acceleration of the implementation of the Social and Solidarity Economy Law, as it is the third economic sector that would contribute significantly to helping women integrate into the economic cycle, based on the activation of the Tunisian Commission for Social and Solidarity Economy, as mentioned in the same statement.
